Who we are & what we do

Ponsonby Furniture & Joinery

Handmade Solid Wood Fitted kitchens across the Lake District, Cumbria and the UK

For over 35 years Ponsonby Furniture & Joinery has been designing and creating unique and quality solid wood, hand-crafted furniture and fitted kitchens from its Cumbria workshops, to meet the varying individual needs and desires of our customers, across the Lake District and throughout the UK.

The business was founded in 1984 by Malcolm Mounsey, a fully qualified carpenter, joiner and cabinet maker. Still passionate about his profession, Malcolm has ensured fine cabinet making skills are preserved by employing and training apprentices throughout the full lifespan of his business.

Whilst we are based in Cumbria, not far from the towns of Egremont and Whitehaven and close to the Lake District, we can and do carry out commercial and domestic assignments throughout the UK.

At Ponsonby Furniture & Joinery we aim to deliver a personal, professional service and handcraft solid wood fitted kitchens and furniture to the highest quality and standards.

We pride ourselves in our client centered approach, our attention to detail and our ability to deliver high quality solutions to every project.

It is vital you know what is going on and that your project runs smoothly. This is why we manage the whole process with meticulous detail. Each kitchen is unique; from the initial consultation and planning through to the cabinetry, preparation, delivery and fitting. All the work is carried out by our own team with full control at every stage.

We’re happy to interpret detailed plans, begin from scratch with a blank design or start somewhere in-between. Either way, we’ll look at every project creatively and will be there to assist you during each stage of the process.

At an initial consultation we will visit your property and meet with you to discuss your project requirements in detail. This is a great opportunity for us to better understand the space for your new kitchen.

We take time to understand the brief that you have in terms of the space requirements, the style of design you envisage and what you are trying to achieve. The more information you can give us, the better we can understand your brief.

We can discuss your design ideas, various options and possibilities that are available, specifications, material choices, finish preferences and to look through collated images and ideas that inspire and interest you.

Following the client meeting we will provide simple design sketches, an estimate of cost and a potential timescale for the project.

Should the proposal be agreed in principal we will request a deposit, work on detailed designs and select materials and finishing products (timber, paint shade, handles, worktops, appliances etc.).

The kitchen Plans will often be modified at this stage as clients are exposed to in-depth plans and design features but once these and the costing are finalised we work to them so there are no surprise extras.

Further payments will be requested in installments once construction begins, with the final amount payable on completion.

Once the kitchen design and plans have been agreed, the construction of the Kitchen will then begin in our workshop.

Clients are welcome to visit our workshop to see their kitchen taking shape and we can send photos at critical and key stages of the construction.

Once construction is complete, delivery and fitting of the kitchen will be carried out by our own team.

A typical installation will take between 4-5 days.
